SLÖJDFRÖJDSKALAS

Exhibition period: June 5 – August 17, 2025

The exhibition shows carved objects with decorative patterns made by Slöjdarmolly. Molly Sjöstam, or Slöjdarmolly as she is called, grew up in the city of birches, Umeå. She works in wood with a knife as a tool and carves decorative patterns. Her work stands out from the crowd and is often adorned with flowery handles or a cinnamon bun.

Molly got her first carving knife when she was 8 years old and carved sporadically while growing up, it was only when she started at Vindeln folkhögskola that she got hooked on carving. Today Molly works full-time with her craft. She is a course leader and holds carving and widdeling courses. She also carves handles for axemaker Julia Kalthoff's axes while working on various craft assignments. Keeping a balance in what she does and taking on fun assignments where you can express your own style is important for Molly in order to preserve the joy of crafts.

Molly's own words about the exhibition:

"Grandma, did the invitation card to my Slöjdfröjdskalaset reach heaven? Great! Because you are the guest of honor!"

This exhibition is a tribute to my grandmother Karin, the number one coffee hostess! She who baked the world's most delicious buns with melted icing sugar on them. Roll cakes, fork cakes, twists. At least twice a day we would fika and drink coffee. When I think of my grandmother, it is the fika that I remember most, how lyrical she was when the fika was served. How grandma and grandpa sat against the south wall of the cottage, enjoying their fika. It is an image, a memory that makes me very warm, safe and nostalgic. The sound of the coffee maker, the smell of coffee, an electric whisk whipping cream, that combination, it makes my body tingle - PARTY!

I don't drink coffee myself and I'm not particularly fond of fika bread to be honest but the memories, the smells, the colors, the shapes - I love them.

With my exhibition "Slöjdfröjdskalaset" I want to invite you all to my childhood party memories and to my grandmother's.

A warm welcome!
