Slöjd och handarbete ger barn och unga viktiga verktyg för livet – inte bara för att skapa saker, utan också för att bygga kreativitet, självkänsla, hållbarhetstänk och gemenskap.
1. Utveckling av kreativitet och problemlösningsförmåga
Slöjd och hantverk ger barn utrymme att tänka fritt, pröva idéer och hitta egna lösningar. Det stärker deras förmåga att se möjligheter, experimentera och våga misslyckas, vilket är en central del av lärande och innovation.
2. Träning av finmotorik och koncentration
När barn arbetar med händerna – syr, snidar, flätar eller bygger – tränas både motoriska färdigheter och koordination. Samtidigt utvecklas deras uthållighet och förmåga att fokusera under längre tid.
3. Stärker självkänsla och identitet
Att skapa något konkret med egna händer ger en känsla av stolthet och självförtroende. Barnen ser att deras arbete har värde, vilket kan stärka identiteten och motverka känslor av misslyckande i mer teoretiska skolämnen.
4. Kulturell förståelse och tradition
Slöjd och hantverk knyter an till kulturarv och traditioner. Genom att ta del av olika tekniker och material får barn en djupare förståelse för historia, kultur och hållbarhet, samtidigt som de kan utveckla nya uttryck för framtiden.
5. Hållbarhet och medveten konsumtion
När barn lär sig att skapa, laga och återbruka saker, utvecklar de en medvetenhet om resursanvändning. Detta kan leda till mer hållbara vanor och ett kritiskt förhållningssätt till slit-och-släng-kulturen.
6. Variation i lärande och balans mot digitalisering
I en tid då mycket av barns vardag är digital, är det viktigt med aktiviteter som involverar hela kroppen och sinnena. Slöjd och handarbete ger balans mellan det abstrakta och det konkreta, mellan skärm och verklighet.
7. Social gemenskap och samarbete
Många slöjd- och hantverksprojekt uppmuntrar till samarbete, delande av idéer och gemensamt skapande. Det kan stärka gemenskapen i en klass eller fritidsgrupp och bidra till socialt lärande.

This spring, we held two workshop sessions for the 13–19 age group, where participants had the opportunity to create patches together with textile artist Ida Isak.
This fall, we will offer more opportunities for young people to try out different craft techniques. More information about dates and times will be announced later.

My Norrbotten through crafts

EXHIBITION AND WORKSHOP
What does Norrbotten mean to you? A place can be so many things, big and abstract or tiny and very clear. Indoors or outdoors, a form, a feeling, a relationship, a material or a memory. What is Norrbotten for you is not necessarily Norrbotten for someone else.
This autumn, the Crafts and Design Center is organizing the exhibition “Crafts and Design Salon 2025”. The salon shows the breadth and skill that exists within the crafts and design area in Norrbotten with contributions from crafts, duodji, crafts, design and design. The salon is a jury-judged exhibition where the practitioners are professionals and have connected their works to the theme “My Norrbotten”.
During the visit, the students are guided through the Crafts and Design Salon and we connect to a few selected works and then conduct a workshop in weaving together.
FIX, CARE, REPAIR
SPRING 2025
EXHIBITION AND WORKSHOP
How do we take care of what we own instead of throwing it away and buying new? Broken items evoke different emotions—can repaired garments be beautiful? This spring, Slöjd och Formcenter focuses on providing children and young people with insight and a greater understanding of sustainable consumption and production of handicrafts, design, and form.
During your visit to Slöjd och Formcenter, the class will actively explore the center's two exhibitions:
The Future is Local, which focuses on local production and is produced by the Swedish furniture manufacturer VERK and the clothing company A New Sweden.
The second exhibition of the spring is created in collaboration with textile artist Takao Momiyama, with sashiko as the focal point. Sashiko is a Japanese embroidery technique originally used to strengthen and repair damaged clothes and textiles.
After the joint tour, students will be engaged in a workshop where we explore different types of repair techniques. The tour and workshop are tailored to the students' age and group size.
The cultural experience is organized in collaboration with Luleå Municipality.
